ACROBATICS EVERYDAY

June 2, 2009

what? huh? a post?

Filed under: concert news, site news, mp3s — sam @ 2:25 pm

okay so it’s been quite some time without a post here @ acrobatics everyday headquarters. with this in mind let me say that this blog will hitherto be at no loss for content. content always!

firstly, to answer the ever-present question of WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ACROBATICS EVERYDAY since i (sam) am graduating: nothing. while i am going to attempt to draw up some sort of ‘divison-of-labor’ thing so as to ensure that irvine stays on the concert-map for as long as people in irvine want to see good music, in the short-term, nothing is changing.

this thursday JUNE 4, acrobatics everyday will be presenting a free show on behalf of the UCI arts department quarterly BOXED art event. this begins at 6pm with free food and an art opening at the university art gallery. music will start at about 7:30, and will feature BIG WHUP and THE HAPPY HOLLOWS, two mostly-LA based indie-pop bands. probably one of the more accessible-type shows we’ve done in a long time, but given that it’s an outdoor deal that is meant to seamlessly integrate with the art events around…didn’t want to bring the noise for posterity’s sake. not to say big whup and happy hollows are gonna tip toe around their distortion pedals…

a couple of shows post-grad will probably fill out june–a relaxed banger DOS (feat. mike watt + kira roessler) and CAPILLARY ACTION on june 15th and an off-the-fucking-chain face-destruction dance party with CAPTAIN AHAB, HAWNAY TROOF, EAR PWR, and ADVENTURE on june 16th. stay tuned for locations for those two.
with that let me share with you an excellent find i came across some moons ago. aaron dilloway of the ever-relevant wolf eyes recorded this music in 2005 in nepal while his wife did research on something or other. it is the sounds of street performer musicians, sort of like the kinds you see at 3rd street in santa monica except they are fucking snake charmers. it is a BEAUTIFUL and enchanting album, fittingly titled SOUNDS OF THE INDIAN SNAKE CHARMER by the Nath Family. It is out on HANSON RECORDS (though the LP is sold out).

nath family - untitled 2 - sounds of the indian snake charmer

i’d say if you dig this, buy the CD version from hanson. or petition for a vinyl repress!

long time no blog–hope you’re all doing well.  i could say something about how summer is pretty much over, but we…don’t want to think about that.  onto concert news, site news, and other news:

1.  HOLY WOW do we have a bunch of awesome shows coming up!  no seriously.  these shows will be so solid.  a lot of talent coming ’round these parts, folks.  thanks to sam for setting up the shows and thanks to all the artists for coming out and agreeing to play.  john thill on monday, with voice on tape and problems?  it will be IN ALDRICH PARK, endless bummer-style.  let’s hope a baby shows up and frolics/runs around.

2.  did you see the new map link on the main acrobatics everyday page?  yeah?  it’s pretty handy, isn’t it?  google map it up to find out how to get to the various showspots on the uci campus.  locating our “venues” can be tricky sometimes.

3.  i’d like to share an mp3.  so i’m sitting home alone right now on a friday night (not asking for pity, people) and for whatever reason i’m feeling kind of low (REALLY, I DON’T WANT YOUR PITY) and i just overdosed on mixed nuts (too many peanuts in the mix, not enough cashews and almonds).  well anyway.  somehow i ended up listening to “while you were sleeping” by elvis perkins for the first time with my nice headphones (that i was lucky enough to receive as a gift and thus, not have to shell out big buck$$$).  let me tell you, a pair of quality headphones is a necessity for any person who gives a damn about music.  really.  they really do make a difference.  they pick up on the subtleties in the music that are usually lost when ipod earbuds or crappy laptop speakers are used.  something about the music encompassing/being pressed up right against your ear, i suppose.  there’s something very beautiful about being able to fully and clearly experience a song, with no part of it left behind.  so ANYWAY.  there i was, listening to the song, and realizing for the first time that it sounded so much better now that i could hear each kick drum thump and each plucked guitar string and each drawn breath and each violin flourish in the background and each soft cymbal crash and each low bass note and on and on.  there’s instrumentation in the song i wasn’t even aware of!  there’s a part that sounds like someone’s softly blowing across glass bottles filled with different levels of water to produce varying notes, and there’s a total in the aeroplane over the sea-esque theremin/saw sound.  it was just all so…pure?  and everything all together made me really appreciate and enjoy the song to the point where i feel a little strange/sad listening to it.  i don’t know.  okay i am rambling.  i’m not sure what the point of all this is…i guess this track just made me feel tonight, and if you’d like to, you can listen to it as well.  nice headphones are not required, but definitely encouraged.

:::::elvis perkins - while you were sleeping::::::

yep.  text-heavy, i know.  i am not like this normally, i swear.

that’s it for me tonight.  see you dudes and dudettes on monday and at the upcoming shows.  acrobatics everyday forever and ever.

CONCERT SUNDAY = SUCCESS
if you came, you are a shining star and i love you.
if you played capture the flag with us and the mae shi despite the 100 degree weather, you are a shining star and i love you.

there are some great things on the horizon. there always are.

at peet’s coffee here at the university center there are only a few outlets, and they are by the ‘rear’ entrance. at this entrance, they have one of those contraptions above the door that blows air brusquely when the door is opened and then shuts off once it has been closed. on numerous occasions however, the thing does not shut off regardless of the state of the door, and therefore ceaselessly blows relatively cold air at everything in the vicinity. forget for a second that it is broken. what is its purpose in any case? i don’t see why it has to blow air at the incoming/outgoing customer. it’s like mild physical assault. i don’t understand.

show next wednesday!
CRASH NORMAL // FRANCE
THE MUSLIMS // SAN DIEGO
WOUNDED LION // LOS ANGELES
SOME DAYS // LOS ANGELES
@ PHOENIX GRILLE // UCI
7pm | $5 | ALL AGES/ALL WELCOME

here’s a pretty picture you can post places:

apparently i broke the forums when i tried to protect them from spambots last week. i’ve now not only fixed that problem, but updated the software! it looks extra pretty. so if you tried to register recently and the website broke, you can do it now!

here’s a song that i dig by mr rafter roberts. he’s playing at KOHOUTEK this saturday, along with the best live band in the world, AKRON/FAMILY. also playing are health and bad dudes, and some others.

mae shi! + site updates

Filed under: concert news, site news, donations — sam @ 9:36 pm

the mae shi just confirmed 4/13/08 at uci! o joy!

here’s the facebook page for that:
ATTENDANCE IS LIKE AN E-HUG

in other news, configuring the look of this blog is proving difficult. the themes won’t display when i ask them too. so for now, it will look sort of bland.

added a “donations” button to the home page. donate monies, if you want. donated monies will turn around and become awesome in the form of concerts that shine like god’s teeth. if you donate more than like five dollars or so, i will mail you something cool, like a mix cd and maybe a drawing by me or someone i know, like my 7-year old brother. you don’t have to donate though!

also added a friends page. if you are a friend, email acrobaticseveryday@gmail.com and give me a link and an image to use as a link. you will be represented thus. anyone who is friendly can have a piece of the friends page, so email away!

last addition: a forum. soon, like later tonight or tomorrow. a place to discuss and share music, ask life questions, (not) sell drugs, form bands, be friends, sell/trade stuff, wax (faux)political, and tell everyone “what song you’re listening to right now.”

okay, all for now.

here’s a video to keep entertained:
